Access :The room at your origin/destination
home to park a vehicle, the distance from vehicle
to front door, the availability of lifts, how
many floors the building has, and so on, all have
an influence on access.
Accessorial Services: A term
used to describe those services not directly related
to the transportation of household goods. Typical
accessorial services are disassembly of unique
furniture items, i.e. pools table, swing set,
satellite dish, appliance refrigerator, washer,
dryer servicing or shuttle service, etc…
Actual Weight: The actual scale
weight of a shipment.
Additional Transportation Charge (ATC):
This regionally adjusted charge compensates the
carrier for services performed in areas where
the labor rates are higher than the national average.
It also compensates the carrier for additional
costs incurred due to traffic congestion and added
time traveling to an area for pickup or for delivery.
Agent: Packing company can authorize
to act on their behalf for custom clearance or
some other work.

Bill of Lading: This is your
contract with the carrier. It is your receipt
for your goods and the contract for their transportation.
Your signature acknowledges that your goods have
been loaded on the moving van and "released
to the carrier".
Bonded Warehouse : A warehouse
that meets with local Customs specifications,
and allows shipments to be stored pending clearance
by Customs.
Booker :The company which you
have chosen to be in charge of your move.

Carrier: The company providing
transportation for your household goods and
on whose interstate or intrastate operating
authority the shipment is moved.
Chargeable Weight : The weight
used by an airline to determine the air freight
charge, charges based on the greater of scale
weight or the dimensional weight..
Claim: Shipper's statement
of loss or damage to any of his or her household
goods while they were in the care of the carrier
or its agent. Such a statement is generally
made on a "Claim Form".
C.O.D. (Cash on Delivery):
Shipments where customer pays moving charges
at the time of delivery. For C.O.D. shipments,
payment is required in cash or by pay order
or credit card (pending a prior credit card
approval process). Personal checks are not accepted
for payment of C.O.D. charges.
Consignee: The person to whom
the shipment is to be delivered.
Consignor: The person from
whom the shipment is picked up.
Container (steamship/ocean) :
Standard size is 20’, 40’ and limited availability
of 40’ "high cube" and 45’ containers.
Containers and chassis equipment are provided
and owned by steamship companies.

Corporate Account: Your employer
company, which is responsible for the removal
charges.
Cost per cubic meter/cubic feet :A
rate given on the estimated space your belongings
will fill on a truck /container.
Cost per 100 lb. : A rate given
on the estimated weight of your belongings.
CP (Carrier Packed): Articles
packed into cartons or crates by the carrier,
not the shipper.
Crate :A timber case for an
overseas shipment (often referred to as a liftvan).
Cubic Feet: The basic unit
of measurement describing the overall size of
a shipment; the cubic capacity of a crate, liftvan,
container or air freight tri-wall container.
The mathematical cubic foot symbol is f3, 1
cubic meter equals to approx. 35.32 f3.
Customs Clearance : Formal
inspection procedures carried out by local Customs
before allowing shipment to export from a country
or import into a country.
CWT.: This abbreviation stands
for the rate or charge per 100 pounds.

Declared Value: Value the owner
declare its goods to be for the purpose of insurance.
This will form the basis of your insurance cover
and it is important that it reflects the value
of your belongings.
Demurrage: The fee assessed
for holding household goods in an ocean container,
truck / trailer or other carrier owned equipment
beyond the allowed time. Fees are charged for
each day.
Density: A mathematical ratio
between size (volume) and weight of a shipment.
Destination Agent: The agent
designated in the destination area to act for
destination clearance and delivery for your
shipment.
Dimensional Weight: The space
or volume of a shipment. Determined by multiplying
the length x width x height in meter and multiplying
the sum with167kgs for air shipment
Domestic: Refers to shipment
when the origin and destination points are located
in the same country.
Door-to-Door Relocation: All
of the moving services from your origin home
to the new home at your final destination.
Duty: A tax levied by a government
on the value of the household goods imported
or exported.

Estimate: A professional assessment
as to the van space requirements, weight of
your household goods and cost of the move determined
by the physical visual inspection of a shipment
by a representative of the carrier.

Export Wrapping : Method of
packing household and personal effects for transportation
overseas. Usually involves heavier and more
specialist materials.
Extra Pickup/Delivery: Household
goods that are tendered by the shipper for pickup
at more than one origin and or delivery location

Flight Charge (Stair Carry):
An extra charge for carrying items up or down
flights of stairs
Full Container Load (FCL) :
A container carrying your belongings exclusively,
with specified move dates as agreed with your
mover.
Full Cover – Detailed insurance
cover, usually includes loss, theft, fire and
breakage, (breakage maybe restricted to items
packed by your professional mover). May carry
excess or deductible, maximum limits on total
value or certain types of items, pairs and set
clause, mechanical derangement clause and specific
exclusions, for example money, stamp collection
and jewellery.
· Full Replacement Value Protection:
A valuation program, which does not incorporate
depreciation as a factor in settling, claims
for loss or damage.

Gross Weight: The total weight
of the ocean container, liftvan or airfreight
container along with the packing materials and
the household goods. The container is weighed
at qualified scales. The gross weight minus
the tare (empty container or liftvans) weight
equals the net weight of the shipment
Groupage : Where your shipment
will not fill a container, you can save money
by sending it groupage. This means your shipment
will be loaded with others to fill a container.
You should pay lower shipping charges, but delivery
will take longer.

Hazardous materials
:also referred to as dangerous goods
or restricted articles, are described as articles
or substances that are capable of posing a significant
risk to health, safety or property when transported
by sea or air.
The following are examples of dangerous goods
that must be declared at time of booking:
Oil-based paint and thinners (flammable liquids)
Industrial solvents
Insecticides, garden chemicals (fertilizers,
poisons)
Lithium Batteries (not in cameras)
Magnetized materials
Machinery (chain saws, outboard engines containing
fuel)
Fuel for camp stoves, lanterns, torches or
heating elements
Automobile batteries
Infectious substances
Any compound, liquid or gas that has toxic
characteristics
Bleach
Flammable adhesives
Perfume
Alcohol
Holiday Pickup/Delivery : Based
on National Holidays and recognized local holidays,
all services required on these scheduled days
will be charged an additional fee.

Insurance: Coverage for specified
amount set as a value of the goods shipped and
covered as an insurable amount. All insurance
amounts must be indicated at time of booking
in order to properly cover and apply an insurance
coverage to the shipment. All insured amounts
will be required before the freight is picked
up
Insurance certificate : The
official insurance document given to you by
the insurance company. You will need this in
the event of a claim.
International: All locations
outside of the domestic definition
Inventory: The list itemizing
the goods (and their condition) that you have
released to the carrier. The origin service
agent prepares your inventory during packing.

Less than Container Load (LCL) :
Where your shipment does not fill a complete
shipping container.
Liftvans : (wood) Specially
constructed wood boxes used in international
relocations. Liftvan size can be from 196 f3
to 294 f3.
Linehaul : The charge to move
your shipment by road from point of collection
(which could be at the dockside) to its final
point of destination.
Long Carry Charge: An additional
charge incurred when articles must be carried
an excessive distance to the movers truck.

Net Weight: The difference
between the gross weight and the tare (empty)
weight of a container, liftvan or air freight
container. This is the actual weight of a shipper’s
household goods.

Order for Service: The document
authorizing the carrier to transport your household
goods.
Origin Agent: The agent designated
in the origin area to act for packing, loading,
transport your goods to shipping terminal, origin
customs clearance etc…

P
Packers : Persons in charge
of packing, wrapping, loading the goods at origin
and unpacking, unwrapping and unloading the
goods at destination.
Packing List :This document
lists all the goods that are packed in a shipment
and the main purposes: It is used to check the
goods at all stages of handling; as a receipt,
therefore the importance for the customer of
signing for agreement when the goods are collected
and unpacked; as an attachment to the insurance
certificate as it is an evidence that the goods
were shipped and their conditions at the time
of packing; for customs clearance as proof of
the goods which are being imported.
PBO (Packed by Owner): Articles
packed into cartons or crates by the shipper,
not the carrier.
Permanent Storage: Household
goods storage in a warehouse for an extended
period (years) of time.

Routing : The route the shipment
will take to the eventual destination (the route
itself as well as the mode of transportation
and type of carrier service).

Shipper: The individual or
family whose household goods are being transported
and is the owner.
Shuttle Service: Occurs when
a smaller vehicle is used to haul goods to a
location that is not accessible to large moving
trailers.
Storage In Transit (S.I.T.):
Temporary storage of your household goods in
the warehouse of the carrier's agent, pending
further transportation.
Survey: The booking or origin
agent examines (i.e.: surveys, or visually inspects)
the shipper's goods to develop a cost estimate.

Tariff: The carrier's provisions,
including rates, for services performed during
the course of moving a shipment.
Third Party Services : Some
movers offer to arrange / co-ordinate additional
professional services e.g. Plumbers, House Cleaners,
Waterbed dismantling/assembling, carpenters,
maid service.
Tracking: The act of receiving
periodic updates on the progress of a shipment
by checking information on KMI website or receiving
proactive notification via email, fax or phone.
Transit Time : The time indicated
between collection and delivery of your belongings.
Tri-wall Container: Special
cardboard boxes or cartons designed to be used
for air freight shipments of household goods
or personal effects.

Unpacking: The removal of your
goods from containers (boxes) and crates, and
the disposal of such containers and packing
materials.

Van: Movers call all types
and kinds of trucks used for moving "vans".
A van can be small or a big trucks

Warehouse Handling: An additional
charge applicable each time SIT service is provided.
The charge compensates the mover for the physical
placement and removal of items within the warehouse.
Weekend Pickup/Delivery: A
special service for pickup or delivery on the
calendar days of Saturday and/or Sunday. An
additional charge will be assessed for this
service.
